Rest day

I'm planning on hitting the treadmill one day and then resting the next.

For today I will be doing stretching exercises at my desk. This will reduce chances of any muscle tears/cartilage injuries that might cause me to stop exercising altogether.

Breakfast was a bowl of mueslix with some milk and a banana. Not sure what will be for lunch. I'll likely run to a grocery store and pick up a salad. I believe wife is making up a black bean soup for dinner.

A bit of history

Thought it might help others to understand what I am attempting to do by relating some of my personal medical and fitness history.

I was a cross country athlete in High School and had some moderate success. Nobody could call me slow as a snail, but I wasn't a top athlete either.

After I left High School I joined the Coast Guard and my activities slowed down greatly. Not a lot a long distance runner can do on a ship that is only 248 ft. in length.

I left the Coast Guard after 4 years and went into the restaurant business. A couple years as a waiter/bus person and then studied Food Science Management at West Seattle Community College.

Cooking had a lot of activity but it was not geared for stamina. I spent about 17 years working as a cook. The last 7 years in a five star hotel/restaurant in Coconut Grove Florida.

I left the hotel and went to work as a purchasing agent and store room clerk. I suffered a back injury on the job and needed to change careers. At the time networking and computer type jobs were extremely high demand. I chose that field and received training at the MEED program (Microcomputer Education for the Employment of the Disabled) at what was then Miami Dade Community College, I believe that now the name is Miami Dade College.

Because of the back injury and my now sedentary job (was working at a call center) I began gaining weight. Gaining weight most often begins slowly and escalates. At least, this has been my own personal experience and the experience related by others.

I still have two rods and 4 screws holding my back steady. The back injury was a blown disc at the l5-s1 level. A laminectomy was performed, taking some bone from my hip to fuse the vertebrae. I do occasionally have back pain which in the past has limited my activity as well.

At any rate, I am determined to release fat till my BMI (Body mass index) is within acceptable range.

whew.. finally getting organized

Sorry for taking so long to post back. I have been trying to rearrange my schedule to give me time to use the gym at work.

I've also been working with the obesity study manager to get a chart of my progress and I have not had a lot of success. I'll plan on bringing my own chart with me to the next appointment.

Update for today is that I got up early and went to the gym. I used a treadmill for an hour and according to the programming (not sure I believe the programming but it is likely fairly close) I burned up 500 calories. After the workout I walked at normal pace to cooldown.

I set the target heart rate at 140. I acheived the target at about 20 minutes. Continued the rest of the workout.

As of my last visit which was two weeks ago I had lost an additional 5 lbs. Total fat release so far is about 8 lbs. This has me averaging about 2 lbs fat release per week.

On the menu so far today is a few green grapes (about ten or so) which I consumed about 10 minutes after the workout. I'll wait about an hour and then I will have a bowl of Mueslix for breakfast with milk. Lunch is planned as a bowl of chicken soup with noodles. Dinner will be grilled chicken breast with a mix of broccoli and cauliflower on the side.

I've pretty much eliminated potatoes and any type of soft drinks from my diet. I believe a lot of that has to do with the weight loss so far.

Now that I have actually started seriously exercising I am certain the weight release will occur faster.

You may notice that I am not using words such as weight LOSS or Fat LOSS. I am writing fat release because I don't intend to "find" the weight again.
